Fauna The diversity and variety of wildlife in Bohinj are the results of its location, significant vertical drop, the influence of the Mediterranean Sea and geological structure. The most characteristic among herbivore animals is the chamois that is also the protagonist of the story about the chamois with a golden horn. The ibex, that became extinct about 300 years ago, was reintroduced to the area from the central Alps. In the 20th century the marmot was also settled to the area. The most characteristic among larger carnivore animals are the species of lynx, wild cat and brown bear; however these are considered to be relatively rare in Bohinj. Stone marten, pine marten and mountain hare also have to be mentioned among mammals. Bohinj is well known for the capercaillie and the black grouse. Among birds, the golden eagle is especially worth mentioning. More than 200 bird species live in the area of Bohinj. The most well-known snake species are the horned viper and viper. The area is also rich in different fish species, among which the brook trout, the grayling and the eelpout are autochthonous. The golden trout was introduced to the lake at the time of World War II.
