Route description
You will learn about the archaeology of the high mountain area of the Julian Alps – from the Roman period to the medieval period, which are featured by archaeological findings in the area of the Pokljuka Plateau, the Triglav mountain range, Mt Komna and the Lower Bohinj mountains. The high mountain Iron Trail runs along these archaeological sites that are characterised by rich cultural and natural heritages. The trail has been organised within the international Iron Trail Project.
The trail from Vogel to Komna also presents a part of the high mountain Iron Trail, since it runs along the newly discovered sites that date back to the Bronze Age and to the medieval period.
Participants shall gather at 7.45 am at the lower station of Vogel Ski Centre cable car, which will take you to Mt Vogel at exactly 8.00 am. You will then continue to the Zadnji Vogel pasture, where you will be able to see the first site that dates back to Late Antique period. Along the path towards the Kal pasture you will see many traces of mining and a post from Bronze Age as well as an early medieval ground plan of a building. The trail continues over Konjsko sedlo to the Za Migovcem pasture, which is also full of findings from the Roman period. You will continue over the Krošnja pasture to the Govnjač pasture, where the architectural remains from WWI can be seen. After a short break on Komna, you will descend to the Savica Waterfall in late afternoon.
