The famous patron of the arts Baron Žiga Zois is considered as one of the most influential figures in the Slovenian history. When he was only 30 years old, he was the richest and the most respected Carniolan noblemen, however, he was not reckless and lavish.
He was a natural scientist, spoke numerous languages, but above all he was a mineralogist and geologist and also a zoologist and botanist.
He played an important part in the development of the Bohinj area. In 1777, he purchased the Bohinj ironworks in the villages of Bohinjska Bistrica and Stara Fužina. He put a lot of energy into their improvements, introduced a new mining regime, improving the supply of ore to the ironworks. Hoping to find a new ore deposit, he also sponsored the first successful expedition to Mount Triglav in August 1778 by four locals from Bohinj.
