18TH INTERNATIONAL WILD FLOWER FESTIVAL: 24. MAY - 9. JUNE 2024
The International Wild Flower Festival is a bouquet of botanical tours, events and culinary experiences dedicated to wild plants, the floral wealth of Bohinj and the local offer.
Festival events take place every year in May and June at various locations in Bohinj, which comprises 24 villages and covers an area of more than 300 km².
The extraordinary plant wealth of the wider Bohinj area has long been a source of interest for botanical experts and admiration for lovers of nature and its beauty. From the earliest beginnings of the scientific study of Slovenian flora, the mountains above Bohinj have been considered a veritable treasure trove of Alpine flowers.
From early spring to autumn, the floral wealth of Bohinj and the mountains above it is a feast for the eyes of everyone who visits Bohinj and its surroundings. As soon as the snow melts, the Helleborus and other harbingers of spring bloom… colourful meadows and hay meadows, shy wildflowers and the splendour of mountain flowers all the way to the highest peaks in summer… and when the forests burst into autumn colours, the beauty of the flowers in autumn – it’s all there for the eye to see. But: the more we know about something, the more we notice! If we go just a little bit deeper into learning about plants and native flowers, the beautiful yellow flower will no longer be just a yellow flower – it will be our friend, about whom we will know a lot of interesting things, and about whom we will be all the happier to meet! Flowers are associated with a wealth of knowledge, stories, ancient wisdom, scientific discoveries, they accompany us from birth to death, inspire creativity and brighten our lives. In the hectic pace of everyday life, we often overlook all these interesting facts. Unfortunately! Moreover, all this floral wealth needs our care and protection so that it can be preserved for the future. Many plant species are threatened, and some are even threatened with extinction.
In order to give the floral wealth of Bohinj, the Triglav National Park and Slovenia the right profile, to encourage the discovery of Alpine flowers, scientific knowledge and creativity related to them, and to enable visitors and locals to experience Bohinj’s nature and cultural heritage in a richer way, we have decided to dedicate a few days to floral themes at a time when most of the autoflowering flowers are in full bloom. From botanical knowledge to folk traditions, from artistic creation to discovering what is not only beautiful – but even belongs in the pot and on the table! And so the idea of the International Wild Flower Festival in Bohinj was born!
FESTIVAL PROGRAMME
During the festival days, there is a whole host of cultural events related to floral themes – from art exhibitions to music evenings. You know – flowers have always inspired artists! Experts have the opportunity to discuss Alpine plants, their knowledge, conservation and importance. There will be workshops and presentations on the many areas and ways in which wildflowers can brighten and enrich our lives. Under the guidance of local guides and botanical experts, you can discover the floral riches of Bohinj, its surroundings and other botanically interesting areas of Slovenia. You can experience Bohinj in a new way – and learn a lot about its past, the harmony between man and nature, and the beauty that sometimes lies in the little things that go unnoticed.

At the end of the world, where fairy tales are at home – Golden Horn’s Fairytale Trail
Where is the end of the world and what is the Golden Horn's Fairytale Trail?
Along the fairy trail in Ukanc, you will find characters from local fairy tales. There are seven in Ukanc on the 2 km circular route, one in the car park at the Ukanc/Vogel/Slap Savica junction and another at the entrance to the Savica waterfall.
This is an unique event. It is something special. It takes place on a two-kilometre-long trail that leads you along the river, through the forest, across meadows and past Lake Bohinj. It’s quiet here all year round, with only the seven heroes of the Bohinj fairy tales waiting for you with their wooden playgrounds. But the “fairytale” weekend is lively, with around 30 stops along the way – around 30 opportunities for children to move, play, learn, create or just develop their senses.
When entering the fairytale trail, children are given a booklet of fairytale creatures and 9 stickers to stick and colour in the booklet.
An adult can walk the route in half an hour, but it is certainly not possible to experience everything in one day with children, even though the event starts at 9:30 and finishes at 14:00 every day. Come – learn new skills and take home good memories.

Description of the botanical garden:
The word Goričca means mountain in miniature. Indeed, from a botanical point of view, this little hill is a very small mountain. There are more than 200 different species of flowers, ferns and mosses. The southern slope is richly vegetated with plants from the large limestone outcrops, and groups of deciduous trees are like scaled-down mixed forests.
The diversity of the flora can be observed almost all year round: the black cornflower peeps out in winter, the liverwort, trumpet violets and violets in early spring.
Many of the plants here are poisonous, such as Solomon's seal, lily of the valley and wolfberry. Some are also medicinal or edible: black thorn, rose hips and lungwort. No plants have been specifically planted on this botanical trail. Nature lovers have merely labelled the plant wealth in their natural habitat in order to educate and raise awareness of nature conservation.

How is cheese made on the Gartner farm?
Since 1999, the Gartner family has been processing milk into dairy products typical of Bohinj. For this purpose, they have built a small cheese factory where they process home-milked milk into cheese, mohant, butter, and albumin curd.
To demonstrate cheese-making and farm life, they have built a model of a farm cheese factory, where you can see the process of turning milk into cheese and curd, and try your hand at cheese-making.
Under the guidance of a shepherd, you will make your own cheese and herbal butter, and there will also be a tasting of the farm's homemade products.

The richness of “drywalls” from a biodiversity and cultural heritage perspective
Expert lecture as part of the StoneRich project.
Dry stone construction is a traditional and ancient technique of using stone without a binder, known wherever stone is found. This lecture will focus on dry construction in the Alpine region. We will learn about the different buildings and arrangements that we encounter every day in the cultural landscape and most of the time we do not even think that they are the result of the physical work of our ancestors.
StoneRich is a project of the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA). Project teams in seven pilot regions are building dry stone walls and piles and offering accompanying activities to promote biodiversity and raise awareness. Funding: Carline Fondation and the Valüna and Binding foundations.

Unique forest experience to discover the melodiousness of the trees and the mysteries of the forest.
Did you know that melody and sound can be elicited from trees, that trees talk to each other and transmit messages? Only certain people can coax mysterious sounds from the trees. You too can make this happen on a guided experience.
Forest melody is an intimate, profound, but nevertheless very intense experience of the forest. As part of a guided experience, you get to know the forest in a different way, as a unique, subtle natural landscape, where you can reconnect with nature and at the same time find your balance and relax. A forest bath and meditation makes you realise how very alive, sonorous and fragile the forest really is – once you become silent.
The exclusive private micro-location guarantees intimacy and privacy. You will discover the resonance of individual trees and together create a harmonious forest melody. You will learn about the disappearing handicraft skills in the local environment, which makes the experience also a story about the living cultural heritage of Bohinj.
Finish the experience with a forest tea, hammock rest, sound bath and natural foot reflexology by walking on the forest floor.

The trail will lead us through a beech forest, where you can see traces of mining. Continue through a forest of black hornbeam and small ash trees. When we will arrive at the view point, we have a beautiful view of the Lower Bohinj Valley, and here we also find our beautiful South Alpine perunculus (Iris pallida subsp. cengialti)). The richness of hilly meadows, a guided botanical excursion to Vogar with Marjana Bajt

- difficulty: medium
- transport on Vogar included (registration required by mail: [email protected])
- equipment: hiking shoes and clothing, rucksack, sun protection and benches, snacks and refreshments
- the event is held with a minimum of 5 participants.
DESCRIPTION:
To the north of Lake Bohinj is a steep ridge where every visitor to Bohinj will quickly spot Vogar, the easternmost peak. It is a popular excursion point thanks to its mountain lodge and beautiful views, and is also popular with paragliders, who jump from it to the meadows by the lake.
We will ride with a van to Vogar. At the lookout point at the monument, on the sloping side, there is a warm-loving forest with black hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia), holly (Amelanchier ovalis), common holly (Sorbus aria), beamed cochineal (Genista radiata) and Carniola lily (Lilium carniolicum).
On Mt. Vogar, the world flattens out into a plateau, with typical hilly meadows formed by glacial-crustal action. The vegetation is typical of dry alpine meadows: in spring, spring cowslip (Gentiana verna), Clusius' cowslip (Gentiana clusii), cowslips (Trollius europaesus), tall prickly pears (Primula elatior), and later, Carniola lily (Lilium carniolicum), Turkish lily (Lilium martagon), carnations (Dianthus sp. ), pink-red umbellifer (Heracleum austriacum), cucurbits or orchids (Orchidaceae), the true ranunculus (Anthyllis vulneraria) and the common arnica (Arnica Montana). We will return to the valley by van.

Floral yoga for children
Why floral yoga you ask? Because it touches Alpine pastures, Triglav wildflowers and different fairytale stories from Bohinj. This time we will meet one special flower from the Triglav Mountains - Planika. Through the fairy tale and its fairy tale characters, we will turn yoga into a magical adventure.
Short description of the story.
In the high mountain peaks, where they touch the sky, grew the most magical flower of all - the Triglav Rose. Its flowers were like jewels, sparkling under the sun's rays. Its presence in the mountains meant not only beauty, but also strength, peace and magic. Its beauty and its scent attracted many visitors from distant lands. And the mountain world was becoming increasingly polluted.
And so the Triglav Rose began to lose its light and magic. Its flowers were becoming stiff and lifeless, causing sadness and anxiety in the mountains. The creatures of the mountains felt that they had to do something to restore the Triglav Rose to its strength and splendour.
That is why all the creatures that lived in these mountains gathered at the Triglav Rose. They brought their gifts and magical powers to help restore its energy. The White Deer was the first to arrive, bringing fresh water from the mountain stream to nourish the roots of the flower. Then came the Blue Bird, whose melodious singing awakened the magical power of the Triglav Rose. Next came the mighty Bear, who brought fragrant honey from his hive to restore the strength and vitality of the flower.
When all the gifts were gathered, the creatures of the mountains formed a circle around the Triglav Rose. Every movement, every breath was filled with magical energy that permeated the mountain air. With every pose, the Triglav Rose grew stronger and its flowers opened wider and wider, revealing their magical splendour.

Free transport from Bohinjska Bistrica will be organised to the event. To register, please email us at [email protected] and indicate your boarding point-bus stop. The timetable can be found at the bottom of the page.

(2015), in January 2017 the band released their second album "Moments To Treasure", where besides traditional songs we can also hear some original material for the first time. In 2017, the band is selected in a strong international competition to perform at one of the biggest Celtic music festivals in the world, the Ortigueira Festival in Spain (Galicia), where they perform in front of a crowd of 30,000 people as the opening concert of the festival.
With their third album Vize (2019), the band first attracted the attention of music critics as well as the media and the general public. 2019 also sees the premiere of Erin's Heartbeat, a dance-music performance that Noreia is co-producing with the School of Irish Dance Ljubljana.
A special chapter in the group's work is the Robert Burns Kilt project, in which together with Jani Kovačič and Laura Krajnc they dedicate themselves to the memory of Scotland's greatest poet. The album of the same name will be released in 2022, as the first "live" concert album of the ensemble.
The band has so far collaborated musically with such great names as Donal Lunny, Tola Custy, Padraig Rynne, Janez Dovč, Diarmaid and Donncha Moynihan, Davog Rynne, Maurice Lennon, Jani Kovačič and many others.

Noreia is a five-piece ensemble of experienced musicians playing traditional Irish, Scottish and Breton tunes, but not in a completely traditional way! Recently, the band has been actively fusing the "Celtic" tradition with their own heritage - Slovenian folk music and creating their own compositions, creating a unique and distinctive sound!SEE MORE:

An exhibition of botanical drawings in the House of Bohinj
You are cordially invited to the exhibition of botanical studies, which will take place in the Bohinj House. Under the guidance of Caroline Ann Yvonenne Bernik, a graduate of the Society of Botanical Artists from Great Britain, this year's study group took place at the Bohinj House, where participants got to know various plants from their roots to their flowers, observed and drew them, and thus acquired botanical knowledge.
The exhibition presents the results of their studies, the main medium of which is polychrome crayon, which is used to create vivid and detailed botanical illustrations.
Do not miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of botanical drawing and discover the beauty of the plant kingdom through the eyes of its creators. The exhibition is a great opportunity for all lovers of nature, art and botany to broaden their horizons and perhaps even find inspiration for their own creative journey.
The exhibition will be open from 24.5. - 9.6. on the ground floor of the Bohinjska House, Mencingerjeva ulica 4, Bohinjska Bistrica. (Every day during the week from 8:00 to 15:00 and during the opening hours of the House).

But it is certainly unique in the other dualities that are part of its life story.

In the meadows of Gorjuše we will learn about flowers and their peculiarities, as well as about the creation and preservation of colourful grasslands. But if mowing and grazing are abandoned, they will be overgrown by forest. But grassland farming must allow a decent livelihood. Nature's conservation is a mirror of the economic and social circumstances of a particular time.

Guided tour of the renovated part of the Pokljuka Trail at Mrzli studenec
You are invited to a guided tour along the renovated part of the Pokljuka Trail at Mrzli studenec with Andrej Arih from JZ TNP.
- the event is free of charge!
- registration required by mail: [email protected]
In the project VrH Julijcev, the Triglav National Park Public Institution in 2023 established, among other things, an outdoor information point at Mrzli studenec and a short section of the existing Pokljuka Trail in the form of a return loop.
The redesigned park trail will thus lead from Mrzli studenec through spruce forests to the edge of Grajska planina and Bled Moor, which interrupt the dense forest area of the Pokljuka plateau. We will continue westwards along the edge of the high moorland, which is not accessible due to its vulnerability. Visitors are warned of the latter by information and marking boards along the route, and access to the sensitive bog area is also prevented by a wooden fence. The Pokljuka Trail will continue to lead us all the way to the national road, which we will not cross, but we will follow a newly laid out section of the trail through the forest back to Mrzli studenec.
Along the way, we will learn about the characteristics and all-round importance of the forests of Pokljuka, get to know the mysterious kingdom of fungi, and return to our starting point at Mrzli studenec, passing the remains of the Saxon line from the First World War.
Exploring Goričca, guided tour of the botanical garden with Majda Ribnikar
INFORMATION:
- Meeting point: Danica Inn
- Duration: 1 hour
- Price: 15,00 €/person
- difficulty level: easy
- equipment: hiking shoes and clothing
- included: guide
- the event is held with a minimum of 5 participants.
Description of the botanical garden:
The word Goričca means mountain in miniature. Indeed, from a botanical point of view, this little hill is a very small mountain. There are more than 200 different species of flowers, ferns and mosses. The southern slope is richly covered with plants from the large limestone outcrops, and the deciduous groups are like scaled-down mixed forests.
The variety of flora can be observed almost all year round: black holly peeps out in winter, liverworts, trumpet violets and violets in early spring.
Many of the plants here are poisonous, such as Solomon's seal, lily of the valley or wolfberry. Some are also medicinal or edible: black thorn, rose hips and lungwort. No plants have been specifically planted on this botanical trail. Nature lovers have simply marked the plant wealth in their natural habitat with the aim of educating and raising awareness of nature conservation.
Special offer:
The Botanical Guided Tour and Floral Menu package is available at a special price of € 33.00 (adults) and € 20.00 (children).

On Saturday, 8.6.2024 at 16:00, you are invited to a picking and cooking workshop with Prof. Karmen Gajšek. Information on usefulness, importance in the ecosystem, potential protection, use in the past, and usefulness today. We will also collect widespread and non-endangered plant species and use them to prepare a lunch using only local and wild ingredients, without visiting shops.
The route will take you along the paths of the rich habitats of Triglav National Park, discovering the preciousness of the natural environment itself. The workshop and all its contents will be an example of a local, healthy, and environmentally friendly subsistence way of life.

- 16:00-16:30: Introduction and tasting of some home-made wild plant savouries
- 16:30-19:00: Field exploration, learning about plant species, interesting facts related to them, collecting widely distributed plant species

Date: Saturday, 8 June 2024
Duration: from 4 pm to 8 pm
Venue: Stara Fužina
Meeting point: in front of the TNP Centre in Bohinj

Karmen conducts foraging and other workshops and lectures all over Slovenia - to complete the circle (human-wildlife-natural production), and also stores plants as valuable products for everyday life, which are also available for purchase. It is about combining theory and practice to realise an environmentally and health-friendly way of life.

The 18th Alpine Flower Festival closes with the Four Brave Man run.

Run around the lake; 11 km:
- A classic run around Lake Bohinj, but in the opposite direction to what you are used to. The finish is also new and will be in the center of Stara Fužina village.
Trail run of the four Triglav flowers; 21 km:
- This trail run is new this year and will more often than not be considered as a trial. It is mainly aimed at those for whom our path around the lake is too small/short.

IRIS CENGIALTI F. VOCHINENSIS
The Bohinj iris (Iris cengialti f. vochinensis) is certainly one of the most beautiful flowers that can be admired in the Bohinj area and is considered one of Bohinj’s botanical specialities. Its beauty and luxurious flowers have brought it from its natural habitat into gardens. It has rightly become the hallmark of the International Wild Flower Festival!
Since ancient times, Iris has been associated with many traditions and beliefs. It was given special importance in the Minoan culture of Crete. A fresco dating from around 1500 BC depicting irises, the oldest known representation of the plant, has been discovered in the Royal Palace of Knossos.
Slavic peoples associate this flower with the god of sky and lightning, Perun, or his wife Perunika. The Slovenian name of the plant – Perunika – is also reminiscent of this mythological connection. In many Slavic nations, the belief that the root of a Perunika plant protects a person or a home from lightning has survived to this day. (Like many men, the god Perun usually took his wife’s advice – and the iris was a sign of her presence!).

Video content
In 2020, the International Wild Flower Festival was digitized. The 2020 festival’s theme was “For every disease, a rose grows”. Although we are sad that we couldn’t celebrate our beloved green and flower-festooned oasis together in the traditional way in person, we hope you will find plenty of inspiration and positive vibes in the videos.
And because Bohinj is just a step away from your home, you can fully experience the colourful meadows, fragrant green forests, diverse network of hiking trails, breathtaking views, delicacies and masterpieces from the local market, and delicious flower menus on an individual basis. And our digital “guides” will help you understand, know and see more than you would otherwise.
All digital events of the festival are also organised in a playlist.
