Cooking art From Bohinj: There’s always more to learn about žganci

Would you like to experience Bohinj through its culinary traditions? Traditional dishes, intertwined with local ingredients, are elevated to high cuisine under expert guidance. The recipes originate from Bohinj’s rich culinary heritage, discovered by local women who have skillfully adapted them to modern tastes.

The cooking workshop will be led by Katica Mikelj, along with members of The Rural Women’s Association Bohinj. With over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, she generously shares her knowledge with students and participants of various training programs and courses. She takes great pleasure in passing on her skills, as evidenced by the positive feedback from course attendees. Last year, she showcased Bohinj’s cuisine on the TV show Večerja za 5 (Dinner for Five).

What will you be preparing?

Žganci (traditional porridge-like dumplings) were once a staple everyday dish in central and alpine Slovenia. Freshly cooked žganci can be served for breakfast or lunch, and they can also be reheated or fried for dinner or breakfast the next day. There are many varieties and ways to prepare them. In Bohinj, we take great pride in our žganci made from the native trdinka corn variety (koruza trdinka).

During the workshop, you will prepare:

  • – Žganci made from native trdinka corn (koruza trdinka)
  • – Corn žganci
  • – Buckwheat žganci – “dry” and “wet” variations
  • – Potato žganci
  • – Polenta

If possible, we accommodate dietary restrictions of participants. The selection of dishes is adjusted based on the availability of local ingredients and participants’ preferences. Most of the ingredients used and dishes prepared are certified BOHINJSKO/FROM BOHINJ.

Workshop details

  • – The workshop is conducted in Slovenian and/or English.
  • – Maximum number of participants: 10

Price for a 4-hour workshop:

  • – Per person: €65.00
  • – For fewer than 5 participants: €400.00
