Jernej Kavšek: Lecture on orchids of Bela Krajina and embroidery exhibition
In principle, orchids or cucurbits are the most numerous botanical family, with more than 20,000 species discovered. Most of these species thrive in the tropics, where they originate. In our temperate climate, their numbers are much lower, with around 500 species in Europe and around 100 in Slovenia. Primorska is the first region in Slovenia in terms of the number of species detected. Orchids, the primates of the plant world, are a very interesting family. As well as being extremely beautiful, their flowers are one of the best indicators of nature’s conservation, thanks to their intricate ecosystem connections. Knowing their distribution indirectly shows us where nature is better preserved.
The author of Wild Orchids of Bela Krajina in Nature and on Embroideries, Jernej Kavšek, who also knows the orchid situation in Bohinj quite well due to family ties, has been exploring orchid sites in the Bela Krajina (and beyond) for more than 15 years. His work has put Bela Krajina and its orchids on the map as one of Slovenia’s botanical hotspots. Jernej Kavšek places great importance on working with the local environment in his orchid research. Over the years, he has built up a wide base of collaborators who help him research orchids in the Bela Krajina. The result of this collaboration with the Črnomelj Institute for Education and Culture (Orchids and Embroidery Study Circle) can be seen in the book, where the flowers of all 45 orchid taxa are embroidered on fabrics. This combination has proved to be extremely successful, attracting a large number of people in Bela krajina, who have become reacquainted with the wonderful world of orchids and have thus become involved in nature conservation in some way.
You are invited to a lecture on 29. 5. 2022 at 19.30 (in Slovenian language). The exhibition will be open from 18. until 20.30.
