The International Wild Flower Festival is a bouquet of botanical tours, events, and culinary experiences,
dedicated to wild plants, the floral richness of Bohinj, and the local offer.
Every year in May and June, the festival events take place at various locations in Bohinj, which includes 24 villages and thus represents as much as 300 km2.
The exceptional plant richness of the Bohinj area has long aroused the interest of botanical experts and the admiration of nature lovers and its beauties. From the very beginning of the scientific study of Slovenian flora, the mountains above Bohinj were considered a real treasure of alpine flowers.
The floral richness of Bohinj and the mountains above it is a real feast for the eyes of everyone who visits Bohinj and its surroundings from early spring to autumn. As soon as snow melts, spring blooms profusely … you simply cannot miss out the flowers. But: the more we know about something, the more we notice it! If we go at least a little deeper into getting to know plants and wildflowers, a beautiful yellow flower will no longer be just a yellow flower – but our friend, about whom we will know a lot of interesting things and we will be even happier to meet her! Flowers are associated with a lot of knowledge, stories, old wisdom, scientific discoveries, accompanies us from birth to death, inspires creativity and beautifies life. All these interesting things are often overlooked in the hectic daily rhythm of life. Unfortunately! In addition, all this floral richness needs our care and protection in order to preserve it for the future. Many species of plants are endangered, and some are even threatened with extinction.
In order to give the floral richness of Bohinj, Triglav National Park and Slovenia real value, to encourage knowledge of wild flowers, scientific knowledge and creativity related to it and to enable visitors and locals to experience the richer nature and cultural heritage of Bohinj, we decided to at the time when the most wild flowers are in bloom, we dedicate a few days to floral themes. From botanical insights to folk traditions, from artistic creation to learning about what is not only beautiful – but even belongs in a pot and on the table! And so the idea of the International Wild Flower Festival in Bohinj was born!
During the festival days, cultural events related to floral themes take place – from art exhibitions to music evenings. You know – flowers have always inspired artists! Experts have the opportunity to consult on wild plants, their knowledge, conservation and importance. There are workshops and presentations of many areas and ways in which wild flowers can beautify and enrich our lives: from photography courses to culinary workshops, from learning about beekeeping to art courses. Under the guidance of local guides and botanical experts, you can get to know the floral richness of Bohinj, its surroundings and also some other botanically interesting areas of Slovenia. You can experience Bohinj in a new way – and learn a lot of interesting things about its past, the coexistence of man and nature, and the beauties that are sometimes hidden in inconspicuous little things.
The gorge expands over the length of 2 kilometres and shows the creative and alluring forces of nature.
