Bohinj has its own cultural identity. Although it is known for its unspoilt nature and the crystal clear waters of Lake Bohinj, it is the rich cultural heritage that comes from the traditional way of life that makes it exceptional. One of the most famous and traditional events in this part of Slovenia is the Cow Ball, an annual event that takes place at the end of September and attracts visitors from all over the world.<\/p>\n

History of the Cow Ball<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bohinj Cow Ball has its roots deep in history. Shepherds and majers used to come down from the mountains with their herds of cows and their “basenga” to spend the summer months. It was a special event, celebrated with joy and gratitude for a successful end to the summer, when the flower-covered cows returned from the high mountain pastures. As time went on, with the addition of restaurateurs and people working in the tourism industry, this custom developed into the organised event that is now known as the Cowball.<\/p>\n

The event used to take place in Sredna Vas, where the first and lasting love stories took place at the village dance, as young people in these remote areas did not often have the opportunity to get to know each other.<\/p>\n

The Cow Ball combines tradition, fun and food. The centrepiece of the event is the parade, where farmers in traditional costume lead decorated cows in a spaniel and passing procession. This cow spectacle is an interesting event in itself, as the animals are decorated with garlands of flowers and colourful ribbons, but as each cow has its own character and personality, surprises are a regular feature of the Cow Ball. In addition to the parade, there are numerous workshops, stalls selling homemade products and culinary specialities such as Bohinj cheese, sour milk rolls and other local delicacies, where the modesty of Bohinj cuisine comes out more creatively every year.<\/p>\n

The importance of the Cow Ball for Bohinj and the Julian Alps<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Cow Ball is not only a celebration of the end of the grazing season, but also an opportunity for the preservation and promotion of Bohinj’s cultural heritage. The event highlights the importance of agriculture and livestock breeding in this part of Slovenia and strengthens the identity and cohesion of the local community. The Julian Alps, with Bohinj at the heart of the Triglav National Park, are not only a destination for nature lovers. They are also a place where tradition lives on.<\/p>\n

The many love stories that unfold at a Cowball are memorable, but so are the many events that take place each year to the amazement of locals and visitors. In 2018, there was a special anecdote. The locals still love to tell it. A cow called Liska, known for her lively nature, decided to check out the snack stalls during a passage. To the laughter and amazement of visitors, she confidently took on the freshly baked doughnuts while the vendor rushed to save his delicacies. This made Liska the real star of that year’s Cow Ball.<\/p>\n
