The Alpine Dairy Museum
STARA FUŽINA
A glimpse into the lives of shepherds on the Bohinj pastures in an authentic setting.
Discover the tradition of life on the mountain pastures in an authentic setting, through artefacts, photographs and documentary material. The Alpine Dairy Museum enables you to understand the significance of Bohinj’s pastoralism and alpine dairy farming as a way of life and coexistence with nature in the high mountains.
The museum preserves the original cheese-making workshop with two large built-in cheese vats (1,200 litres) and a press for shaping cheese loaves. On display are original cheese-making tools and equipment, as well as items used by the herdsmen in their work on the mountain pastures.
Also on display is a wooden alpine herdsman’s hut, complete with its interior furnishings, from the Zajamniki mountain pasture, dating from 1849.
Alpine herding, whose origins date back to the 13th century, and the associated cheese-making trade have, throughout history, formed the basis of agriculture in Bohinj. A lack of arable land, long winters and short summers meant that the inhabitants were largely engaged in livestock farming (cows, goats, horses and sheep). For a long time, milk and dairy products formed the mainstay of the daily diet.
Permanent exhibition in the museum
Also on display are original items of cheese-making equipment (cheese-making tools and utensils,
milk pails, churns for making butter), and a large cauldron on a wooden stand from the cheese dairies in the Blato mountain pasture. Also on display is a ‘majerska’ basket, equipped with the essentials that the herdsmen carried with them each year when moving to the mountain pastures. Photographs depict the cheese dairies and cheese-making work in the mountain pastures, the transport of cheese down to the valley, and so on.
