Cows’ Ball in Bohinj: tradition, fun and cultural identity

Bohinj is characterised by a distinctive cultural identity. Although it is renowned for its unspoilt natural beauty and the crystal-clear Lake Bohinj, it is its rich cultural heritage – rooted in the traditional way of life – that makes it truly exceptional. One of the most recognisable and traditional events in this part of Slovenia is the Cows’ Ball, an event that takes place every third Sunday in September and attracts visitors from all corners of the world.
The tradition continues this year too – on 20 September 2026, the 67th Cows’ Ball will take place in Ukanc!
The History of the Cows' Ball
The Bohinj Cows’ Ball has its roots deep in history, when herdsmen and dairy farmers returned from the mountain pastures, where they had spent the summer months, with their herds of cows and ‘basenga’. The return of the cows, adorned with flowers, from the high-altitude pastures was a special occasion, celebrated with joy and gratitude for the successful conclusion of the summer. Over time, as restaurateurs and tourism workers joined the herdsmen, this custom developed into an organised event, now known as the Cows’ Ball.
Once upon a time, an event took place in Srednja Vas, where the first – and lasting – love stories began at the village dance, as young people in these remote areas did not have many opportunities to get to know one another better.
Programme
The Cows’ Ball brings together tradition, entertainment and cuisine. The centrepiece of the event is a parade, in which farmers in traditional dress lead decorated cows in a guard of honour and a procession. This cow spectacle is an interesting event in its own right, as the animals are adorned with floral wreaths and colourful ribbons; however, as each cow has its own character and personality, surprises are a constant feature of the Cow Ball. In addition to the parade, there are numerous workshops, stalls selling local produce and culinary specialities such as Bohinj cheese, žganci with sour milk and other local delicacies, whilst renowned ensembles, brass bands and folk groups provide the entertainment every year.
The significance of Cows' Ball for Bohinj and the Julian Alps
The Cows’ Ball is not only a celebration of the end of the grazing season, but also an opportunity to preserve and promote Bohinj’s cultural heritage. The event highlights the importance of agriculture and livestock farming in this part of Slovenia and strengthens the identity and cohesion of the local community. The Julian Alps, with Bohinj at the heart of the Triglav National Park, are thus not only a destination for nature lovers, but also a place where tradition is still very much alive.
Interesting facts
Over the years, the Cows’ Ball has not only provided the setting for numerous love stories, but also for events that have remained etched in the memories of locals and visitors alike. Almost every year, something unexpected happens.
One such anecdote dates back to 2018, when a cow named Liska veered towards the snack stalls as she walked past. Known for her lively nature, she tucked into the freshly baked doughnuts without hesitation, whilst the stallholder tried to salvage the remaining treats. Amidst the laughter and amazement of the visitors, Liska quickly became the star of that year’s Cows’ Ball.
