Join us on a cycling adventure in the footsteps of Bohinj trdinka corn. The locals call Bohinj corn “turšca”, which indicates that it came to our region from Turkey. It is a variety of corn that has adapted to the modest and demanding conditions of the mountainous world. It differs from other corn varieties in appearance, as its kernels are multicoloured. They range from yellow and orange to dark red and almost black. In the past, corn was an important part of the daily diet, as it was eaten in the form of corn porridge, which was most often served with sweet or sour milk and with sour cabbage or turnips.
The cycling route leads from the field to the mill, from grain to flour and on to the kitchen, where simple ingredients are turned into authentic žganci from Bohinj.
Along the way, you will meet people who still pass on this knowledge: with their hands, memories and the warmth of their native words.

Our cycling and culinary journey commences in Bohinjska Bistrica, starting with a scenic ride along the Bohinj Cycle Route, leading us towards the picturesque Lake Bohinj. We will have our first stop at Pr’ Ronik Farm. We will see how maize grows and how much work it is. You can see that nothing goes without hard-working hands and good will. Participants receive a small bag of grains and the story of the “žganci” begins.
The trail leads on to Stara Fužina, home to the only still-operating water-powered mill in this part of Gorenjska. Inside the mill, you can hear the sound of stones grinding and the babbling of the brook – this is how corn was ground here centuries ago. Visitors help to grind the corn kernels, sow the flour and learn that each flour has its own weight, smell and character.
From the mill we will go to the centre of the Triglav National Park in Stara Fužina, where we will meet a member of the Farmers’ Wives and Girls Association. She will show us how to make real žganci from coarse flour. The cooking is done slowly, over a fire and with feeling. When the žganci are ready, everyone tastes them together – with sour milk, cracklings or summer vegetables.
The journey ends where it began. At the market, visitors can buy cornmeal, homemade products and simple utensils for cooking “žganci”.
