Swimming

Where are the bathing areas on Lake Bohinj and where else can you go swimming in Bohinj. What are the prohibitions on high mountain lakes.

Lake Bohinj

The largest natural permanent lake in Slovenia offers many possibilities for water activities. Lake Bohinj has designated bathing areas at Fužinski Bay and Ukanc. Both areas are in the Triglav National Park, so certain rules must be followed to preserve nature. Lake Bohinj is renewed three times a year. The main inflow is the Savica river and the main outflow is the Jezernica river. More than a third of the lake’s water comes from karst springs below the lake’s surface along its northern shore. When it rains heavily, karst waters rise to the surface in the Govic spring.

Quality of bathing waters

In bathing water areas, ARSO (Slovenian Environment Agency) monitors water quality every 14 days during the bathing season (in Bohinj between 15 June and 31 August). Check the water quality in Bohinj here: quality of bathing waters.

At these sites, the microbiological quality of the water is monitored and evaluated according to the requirements of the Bathing Directive and national regulations. Information and warnings are also posted on information boards in the bathing water area.

What about our four-legged friends?

Dog owners who take their pets on holiday are probably used to all the adjustments that pet ownership requires, and there are rules in Bohinj too. To make them clearer, here are some pointers.

Bathing of the animals is prohibited in the bathing water area – Ukanc and Fužinarski zaliv (see above). Everywhere else, dogs can be bathed, subject to the Triglav National Park Act, which stipulates that dogs must always be kept on a leash. Bathing in the other lakes of the Triglav National Park is prohibited for both dogs and their owners.

Bathing is prohibited in:

  • all high mountain lakes (Triglav lakes, Krnsko lake,…)
  • Mostnica river
  • Ribnica river
  • Bistrica river
  • lake at Planina Pri jezeru

Indoor bathing is a good choice especially outside the summer season, when the water in Lake Bohinj is only suitable for the “brave”.
